HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2019

HMP Featherstone have been nominated for the Best Partnership Solution Improving Patient Safety Awards for the team’s impressive and highly effective work to reduce drug use.

In the past year the team have achieved a drop in the number of prisoner’s self harming and attempting suicide by eleven percent. In addition, a drop of thirty percent in the number of failed mandatory drug tests. The teams drug strategy involved increasing security and scanning, providing further training for both healthcare and prison staff, liaising with the local ambulance service and offering greater support to prisoners dealing with drug addiction through self-help groups and on-wing support.

Liam Fleury, head of healthcare at the prison commented saying “For the team to be recognised for such a prestigious award, really is a true validation of the hard work that has been undertaken over the past year. It is only through incredible partnership working that we have managed to enable a safer prison community.”

HMP Dartmoor are the second Care UK prison to win a place in the End of Life Awards final for their dignified and compassionate end of life care for their prisoners.

The prison is regularly reviewed by specialist nurses who visit the prison to care for prisoners that are nearing the end of their lives. These prisoners would usually have to be accompanied to a hospital outside the prison or be transferred away from the prison for care. HMP Dartmoor’s approach allows its prisoners to have a peaceful end of life.

Sarah Bromley, medical director for Health in Justice, said: “I am really delighted to see that they have recognised the great work that our teams do and have given us the opportunity to demonstrate Care UK’s commitment to patient safety and continuous quality improvement in the toughest of environments.

Our teams in prisons are dedicated, committed to their patients and demonstrate resilience in their daily roles, having to deal with some very challenging and, at times, traumatic incidents. Their care is regularly scrutinised by multiple external agencies and these award nominations demonstrate their willingness to be open, to learn and to continuously improve the care they provide.”
