Barlborough team shortlisted for prestigious national award

The team at Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre have been shortlisted for one of the most prestigious healthcare awards in the country for their pioneering work in creating a safe and effective joint replacement day case surgery.

The centre has been shortlisted for the Innovation in Care category of the Laing Buisson Awards, which will be announced by comedian and former mental health nurse Jo Brand at a ceremony in Westminster on Wednesday 13 November.

The team, led by medical director Marco La Malfa and lead orthopaedic surgeon Gyorgy Lovasz, created an Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP), which is a modern evidence-based approach that helps people recover more quickly after having major surgery. Spinal blocks are used instead of general anaesthetics and physiotherapists start working to get people up on their feet within two hours of surgery.

Over recent years, with constant improvements being introduced to the ERP, the average length of stay for hip replacements at the centre, in Lindrick Way, was reduced from four days down to 2.2 days.

The fitter patients began going home the day after surgery and occasionally within 24 hours.

Mr La Malfa said: “The obvious next step was, could we facilitate patients going home on the same day as their surgery? Numerous studies show that people recover better at home with less risk of infection and in comfortable and familiar surroundings. Our team is extremely patient-focused and they were determined to make this a reality for our patients. They were not put off by the common theme that a 2.2 day average stay ‘isn’t broken and therefore does not need fixing’ attitude.

“The key success over the last 12 months is undoubtedly the clinical outcomes of our day case hip replacement pilot. None of the 20 pilot patients had to be readmitted, receive catheterisation or suffered any sickness. They reported an average pain score of 0.45 out of a possible three and the highest reported was one. Moreover, no additional pain medication had to be administered after discharge. “

Surgeon Mr Lovasz said: “The feedback from our patients has also been very impressive and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the various clinical teams at the centre who worked together to make this possible. 100 per cent of patients provided an ‘excellent’ satisfaction rating, 100 per cent would recommend us to their family and friends and 100 per cent of patients said they had no regrets about having a day case hip replacement and would do it again.”
